Kaspersky Ban May Prompt a Review of Your Cybersecurity Technology Stack

Kaspersky Ban May Prompt a Review of Your Cybersecurity Technology Stack

On June 20, 2024, the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced a landmark Final Determination prohibiting Kaspersky Lab, Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of a Russia-based anti-virus software and cybersecurity company, from directly or indirectly providing anti-virus software and cybersecurity products or services in the United States or to U.S. persons.

How Does the Kaspersky Ban Impact Businesses?

The impact of this decision could have wide-reaching implications. According to cybersecurity insights company, BitSight:

  • Nearly 25% of Fortune 1000 companies appear to be leveraging Kaspersky products.
  • Dozens of government organizations within the U.S. – including multiple U.S. federal agencies – appear to be using Kaspersky products, despite a multi-year federal agency ban on Kaspersky product usage.
  • Technology, Education, Manufacturing, and Business Sectors are the most common users of Kaspersky products in the U.S.

The U.S. government ban of Kaspersky will have an immediate impact on thousands of U.S. businesses.  All will need to transition to another antivirus solution, which is a foundational component of an organization’s overall cybersecurity approach, by the September 29th, 2024, deadline. Existing users of the platform will need to find alternative solutions to avoid security gaps.
